Writing Richard Glossip

Last week, I wrote a letter to Oklahoma death row inmate, Richard Glossip. I was inspired to do so after watching 'Killing Richard Glossip', a documentary series that was aired on Discovery ID and produced by well known documentarian, Joe Berlinger (Paradise Lost)...

In writing Richard, I let him know that I was not just someone who saw a TV show and "knew" that he was innocent. But that I am someone who does know that, at the very least, he had been given a raw deal by a system that was inexplicably hell-bent on putting him to death, despite a lack of legitimate evidence (much like I was convinced by the eerily similar case Berlinger made for the now freed 'West Memphis Three', in Paradise Lost). I wanted him to know that I was not naive, and that I was not easily swayed by slick production and fancy packaging (AKA I was covering my ass). But, just as importantly, I wanted him to know that there was someone out there, beyond his prison walls, who felt moved enough by his story to reach out and offer what little help I could...

In his 3-page response, Richard spent most of the time thanking all of those that were reaching out and fighting to clear his name, and the rest of the time politely yet defiantly declaring his innocence. But, in response to my questions about what I could do to help further his cause, Richard offered 2 requests:

1) He wants as many people as possible to watch the docu-series, 'Killing Richard Glossip'. Which is still available ON DEMAND via Discovery ID across various infotainment platforms.

AND

2) He asked that I share this poem, which he included in the letter:

WE CAN OVERCOME

We want to be happy,
We want to smile,
And we never want to live our lives in denial.
We no longer want to wear these sad faces,
We only want smiles in their places.
Life is truly hard,
But we can overcome.

We sometimes feel as if hope is lost,
And it hurts when we see at what cost.
Despite everything that can lead us to hate,
We still see the world that we can make.
We can see this life that we can live,
We sure never wanted this.
But we can overcome.

Our streets are now fields of battle,
And so often we are treated more like cattle.
All we ever wanted is a place to call home,
And not to have to face this world alone.
We never thought we could get so depressed,
Or that we would ever be stuck in such a mess.
But together as one,
We can overcome.

He closed the letter with, "We never know how strong we are, until strong is the only choice we have".

This is a man who was had 3 'last meals'. Meaning that, on 3 separate occasions, he has been just hours away from execution. Only to be spared by both litigious and tragically unfortunate/extraordinary means. Which, in and of itself, should tell you that the system is irreparably broken and incapable to handing down such a punishment. But that's a determination I'll allow you to make for yourself after watching the series...

And again, I'm not claiming to "know" that Richard is innocent of the murder-for-hire charges for which he's been convicted. And I'm not trying to minimize the brutal murder of his alleged victim, Barry van Treese. But between the evidence provided in the documentary (or in many cases, lack thereof), and the track record of Berlinger, I am certain that an adequate case hasn't been made that Richard should be put to death. Especially considering that the admitted murderer, Justin Sneed, is not even facing such a fate...

But I urge you to watch the series, and judge for yourself. And at the risk of making up your mind for you, or putting you in a certain mindset before you even watch minute one. I'll say this: I've seen dozens of true crime documentaries. And the most relatable comparison I can make, is that the case against Richard Glossip makes the the case against Steven Avery (Netflix: Making a Murderer) look like the case against OJ Simpson. And if that doesn't compel you to at least check out this series, then I'm not sure what will...

Thanks for your time, friends. I hope you find the series as moving and as troubling as I did. And, in echoing Rich, I hope that we can all overcome what is clearly a tragic a situation, and come out better off as a society on the other side...

The Gresh Show!

Well, friends. In case you hadn't heard (because I didn't post it on THE FECEBOOK), I've come back to sports and begun producing 'The Gresh Show' on 630 AM & 99.7 FM WPRO out of Providence. Weeknights, from 6-9 pm. And as such, I believe you should be listening to 'The Gresh Show' on 630 AM & 99.7 FM WPRO out of Providence. You know, on your weeknights. From 6-9pm. Hell, you can even listen on the Interwebz or via the WPRO app!

You can tune in, call in, tweet in. I mean, whichever poison you pick is fine by me. But either way, we'd love to have you all on board. You know, so long as you aren't a massive Ted...

Yeah. So press the buttons of your choosing, and show your support! Because we'd love to hear from you on any and all topics relating to sports. And dare I say, we're primed to entertain...

So enjoy your Summer, friends. And here's to hoping that you make 'The Gresh Show' a part of your cookout and golf-fueled routine. OR in failing that, we hope to make your car rides to and from the myriad of less desirable events that compose your driving-time a little more tolerable. And hopefully, a little more informative and humor-filled to boot...

Thanks in advance, my damies! I know I can count on your support. And if you don't hear from me (on here) again until football season, where I'm sure to wow you with my expertise in all things degenerati. Well then now you'll know why! But hopefully you won't miss me too much. Ya know. Because you'll be hearing me when you tune into the show...

Be good...

2017 Final Four: Some Things Could be Finer...

Final Four Picks

 (7) South Carolina Gamecocks (+7) vs (1) Gonzaga Bulldogs

(1) North Carolina Tar Heels (-5) vs (3) Oregon Ducks

So, we're almost done dancin'. And then it will be on to baseball and golf. But first, here are my picks for the Final Four. AKA my last chance at jinxing as many as 3 of the 4 teams still left in the field...

I'm really torn in that Gonzaga/South Carolina game, too. Which is why I'm blatantly hedging and taking the points (though I'll certainly want credit should they pull the upset). I mean, part of me wants to see the Zags finally do what it do. But I really do love me some Frank Martin (that's him up there, presumably when he was still at Kansas St.). And the fact that Frank promised Dan Patrick he'd wear a 'special suit' should his Cocks make the final game? Well, that's what we in the business call 'icing on the proverbial cake' (mmmmm. Proverbial caaaaakes) ...

So, yeah. Give me an all-Carolina Final (winner gets James Taylor & a case of Cheerwine), or let Mark Few and that 47-year-old former strongman he starts at center cut down the nets (who needs a ladder, am I right?). Otherwise...meh, otherwise I'll be moving on to baseball and golf. And putting the second consecutive letdown of an NCAA tournament in my rearview mirror...

Enjoy, my damies! And good luck!

2017 Sweet 16: Nothin' Bruin...

Freakin' Duke, am I right? Although if having half of my brackets busTed is the price I have to pay for that picture up there of Sad Grayson Allen. Then so be it...

As for the rest of the dance, I'm more than a little underwhelmed. UCLA is great. And watching that region shake out between them, Kentucky, and UNC should make for some good watchin' (don't sleep on Butler). But unless rock fights are your thing (see: Gonzaga, Arizona, West Virginia), then that's pretty much it. And while that's undoubTedly exciting for some, it's slightly more than a little disappointing for me. And I'd imagine I'm not alone in my thinking that this is at least the second straight year that the tournament has failed to meet it's admitTedly lofty bar...

Then again, I'm probably still just bitter because Syracuse didn't make the dance, and now it looks like their basketball program may or may not be falling apart. And besides. I was disinteresTed in last year's Final Four, too. And it turned into one of the best finishes Facebook has ever seen (several of my friends cited the presence of Jesus and/or God). So, there's always that...

But, yeah. Let's go Bruins! It's time to go 'Ball Deep!'. Which just sounds awful and painful and wrong. But could easily be just as fulfilling. I mean, hey. Who am I to judge? After all, I did pick Duke!...

Be good, Teds. And enjoy...

2017 NCAA Tournament Cheat Sheet

OK, friends. Here ya go!

1-ROUND WONDER = a team that could pull 1 upset, but probably not 2

SLEEPER = a team with a good chance to significantly outplay their seed

WINNER = WINNER

MIDWEST

1-ROUND WONDER: (13) Vermont

SLEEPERS: (5) Iowa St.; (10) Oklahoma St.; (11) Rhode Island

WINNER: (2) Louisville

WEST

1-ROUND WONDER: (14) Florida Gulf Coast

SLEEPER: (7) St. Mary's

WINNER: (1) Gonzaga

EAST

1-ROUND WONDERS: (13) East Tennessee St.; (14) New Mexico St.

SLEEPER: (8) Wisconsin

WINNER: (2) Duke

SOUTH

1-ROUND WONDER: (12) Middle Tennessee St.

SLEEPER: (10) Wichita St.

WINNER: (3) UCLA...OR maybe (1) UNC

FINAL FOUR

(2) Duke OVER (1) Gonzaga

(3) UCLA OVER (2) Louisville

NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

(2) Duke OVER (3) UCLA

I really wanted to take UCLA. Their being a #3 seed and having a transcendent freshman has all the shades of Melo and Cuse in '03. Especially with Cuse having missed this year's cut (it's a sign!). But I just couldn't pull the trigger. I'll have brackets with them winning it all, don't get me wrong. But when push comes to shove, I'm begrudgingly (yet confidently) picking the Dukies to yet again cut down the nets...

And no refunds when UCLA coughs it up in round #1...

Good luck, my damies!

College Hoops Top 16 (1/27)

So, it's the week before the Super Bowl. And in an attempt to remove myself from the ouroboros that is my anxiety about the Patriots' upcoming performance  (IE "there's no way Atlanta can hang"...five minutes later..."but what if they score first?...or create an early turnover?!"), I've decided to post my first college basketball rankings of the new year...

And in keeping up with the Teds, I've shortened my rankings from 25 to 16. Mostly because it goes well with my laziness. But mostly because the top 16 will essentially become the new top 25, if for no other reason than the anticipation of its now annual reveal. Little bit of ouroboros going on there, too. But that's a different discussion for a different day...and for Twitter...

So, absorb and enjoy. And I'll catch you all back here next week for all of the Super Bowl whatnot. And maybe even another obscure reference to an ancient and/or mythical snake. Although I'm pretty sure, barring an energized Google search, ouroboros is all I've got. I am quite the avid Internetsman, though. And I do like going down rabbit holes (it's how I found out that Jeff Lynne produced some tracks for Regina Spektor!). So I guess you Teds will just have to wait and see...

But, for now. Here's this...
